BYZANTINE MUSIC

Issues of historically informed performance of Byzantine Music

This workshop is designed for beginners or advanced music students (from the age of 12 years old), amateur or professional musicians of any religious persuasion interested in the theory and performance of Byzantine Music.

The workshop includes:
• General survey of the history and morphology of the major byzantine musical forms
• Vocal and “Solfege” exercises with byzantine music diagrams, i.e. the simple and composite Koukouzelian wheel (τροχóς), the Tree of parallage (solmization) and others
• Kassia, Sappho’s Byzantine counterpart
• Study of selected byzantine compositions of the Orthodox liturgical year according the eight modes
• Final concert on the 29th of September 2019

GREGORIAN CHANT AND EARLY POLYPHONY

The workshop is available for beginners or advanced music students  (from the age of 15 years old), amateur or professional musicians of any religious persuasion interested in historically informed interpretation of  Gregorian chant and Early Polyphony. The participants should be able to sing.

The main topics of the workshop are:

– “The mystery of Gregory the Great” – the origin and notational types of Gregorian chant

– Milestones of Gregorian chant history – compositional styles

– Hildegard von Bingen – the manifestation of medieval mind

– Early Polyphony

– Practice of selected pieces for the final concert

in the Traditions of the Orthodox Church

This lecture and workshop are designed for composers (of any religious persuasion) interested in the history and practice of working with a number of Orthodox chant traditions, including Byzantine, Znamenny and Serbian.

Liturgical chant of the Western Church
as a source of inspiration for composers today

This lecture and private lessons/workshops are designed for composers (of any religious persuasion) interested in the history and practice of working with a Western Church chant tradition, especially Gregorian.

Led by Slavomír Hořínka

Time schedule:
Lecture of 90 min. Composers, who would like to consult their own work have also possibility to attend individual lessons.
